Denpasar Seventh-Day Adventist Church
A brief history of Surapati SDA Church by elder Tony Simalango:
The year 1957 marked a significant milestone in the history of the Seventh-day Adventist Church on the island of Bali. It was during this year that the Church administration in the Nusa Tenggara region—whose headquarters were then located in Kupang—sent two dedicated female literature evangelists to pioneer the work in Bali. These two faithful workers, Sister L. Taebenu and Sister Markopangkolan, became the first official representatives of the Adventist mission on the island. Through their ministry of sharing literature and visiting homes, the seeds of the Adventist message began to take root.
As their ministry progressed, they gathered existing Adventist believers who were living in Bali at the time. Together, they began to organize Sabbath worship services, moving from house to house in fellowship and prayer. Among the earliest Seventh-day Adventist members in Bali were Sister Townsend, Brother Wira Talahatulusan and his mother, and Brother John Leiwakabessy. This small circle of believers formed the nucleus of what would become the Adventist community in Bali.
Recognizing the growing need for a permanent place of worship, and encouraged by God’s providence, a formal proposal was submitted to the Union office. In December 1958, the proposal was approved, paving the way for the establishment of the first Seventh-day Adventist Church in Bali. With faith and determination, the congregation began the construction of their first church building at Jalan Surapati IV/6, Denpasar—a location that would later become a spiritual home for generations of Adventist believers.
What began as a small prayer gathering of fewer than ten members has, through the grace of God, grown into a thriving congregation. Today, the Denpasar Seventh-day Adventist Church records a membership of 307 individuals, reflecting decades of mission work, community engagement, and unwavering faith.
The church continues its ministry under the pastoral leadership of Pastor Rommy Nelwan, who serves the congregation with dedication and spiritual guidance.
