Hangtuah Seventh-Day Adventist Church
A brief history of Hangtuah SDA Church
The early worship activities of the Hang Tuah congregation began humbly yet with great commitment and unity. A member of the Hang Tuah Sabbath School Branch generously made available a shop-house located at Jalan Hang Tuah 15 B, Denpasar, to be used as a place of worship. Sabbath services were conducted on the third floor of the building, which, through the sacrificial giving of members, was gradually equipped with essential facilities such as air conditioning, sound equipment, and musical instruments. These contributions reflected the strong sense of ownership and dedication among the members.
At its inception, the Sabbath School Branch was driven by eight families who faithfully supported the ministry and activities of the branch. These families—along with several dedicated young people—became the pioneers and spiritual backbone of what would later develop into the Hang Tuah congregation. Their perseverance, unity, and willingness to serve laid a solid foundation for future growth. These families were:
Along with several young people such as Emelyn Simalango and Wilson Tampung.
Within only a few months, the branch experienced remarkable development, both in terms of membership and ministry activities. This rapid progress made it clear that the branch had outgrown its status as a Sabbath School Branch. Recognizing this reality, and through earnest efforts in collaboration with the supervising pastor at that time, Pastor Gerry Takaria, steps were taken to formally organize the branch into a local church.
As a result, on June 10, 2000, the Hang Tuah Sabbath School Branch was officially organized as the GMAHK Hang Tuah congregation. The organization ceremony was led by Pastor J.W.S. Wagiran, who was then serving as President of the East Java Conference. The event was attended by conference officers as well as representatives from the church board of the mother church, GMAHK Denpasar on Jalan Surapati, marking a significant milestone in the history of the congregation.
